As always, I have opinions – but the good news is that the denim direction in 2026 is incredibly democratic. Whether your style leans polished, casual, or a little experimental, there’s something that will work for you (and your closet). DENIM WASHES, COLORS, PRINTS AND EMBELLISHMENTS
LIGHT-WASH JEANS
One of the biggest shades this year is super light denim. While lighter washes naturally tend to pop up around spring and summer, they feel especially fresh styled for right now. It’s that tension between the washed-down, broken-in feeling and the more structured, polished pieces we’re still wearing in winter.
Lately I’ve been reaching for a super light, wide-leg jean with a classic trench and kitten heels – it instantly makes the outfit feel lighter without feeling premature. Try pairing yours with a brushed sweater, a crisp button-down, or even a blazer…before you inevitably swap everything out for tanks and sandals in a few months!
NEUTRALS
Brown was a big denim color for fall, so it makes sense that the shade has lightened up as we move toward spring. In addition to tan, beige, and taupe, grey is making a quiet comeback – ranging from pale, silvery tones to nearly-black charcoal. Consider grey jeans the new black in your denim rotation.
These earthy washes feel especially fresh styled back to other neutrals, either mixed intentionally or worn head-to-toe in a monochromatic look that feels modern and effortless.
DARK WASH JEANS
Dark denim washes and rinses are going to be big this year which is great news for anyone who likes adjectives like “polished” or “timeless” to describe their wardrobe. The clean indigos are also extremely versatile and make any outfit feel elevated with very minimal effort. Wear a denim trouser in a clean, dark rinse for work paired with a button-down shirt. Or try a wide-leg style in an inky blue wash for more casual plans. I love it worn with a baby tee, loafers and a nylon bomber for a look that feels both cool and pulled together at the same time.
PRINTS AND EMBELLISHMENTS
It’s taking me a minute to absorb the return of printed denim and OTT (over-the-top) embellishments – but here we are again! I guess if skinny jeans can make a resurgence, these can too! It’s like they are screaming “Quiet luxury is over!”
I personally prefer a more faded or muted take on printed denim – something that reads more as a neutral like camo or leopard. I don’t mind a strategically placed stud or pearl either. But the real magic lies in exactly how you style these. It’s in the way that you balance them with other pieces that make them feel elevated and considered, not costume-y. A simple white tee with a chic blazer and boots ground them and makes any of these printed or embellished styles feel cool and intentional. (You are wearing the leopard, the leopard is not wearing you!)
WHITE JEANS
White jeans are always popular come summer, but I’ve written several articles on Vetted about styling white jeans in the colder months too. To me, they are at their most chic in the off-season when the styling is more unexpected. Style yours in a preppy (the original meaning of preppy – not whatever my 10 year old daughter thinks it is), sporty, Olympic/ Americana vibe or offset the clean look of white denim with tougher pieces like leather jackets and ankle boots. Just make sure you don’t leave these in your closet until Memorial Day and take advantage of all the ways you can style them right now.
