DENIM STYLES AND TRENDS, BEYOND JEANS

DENIM MNI SKIRTS
If you know me, you know I love a mini mini!
As an alternative to blue jeans, the denim mini is firmly back. From a clean skirt that can go to dressed up events to a cut-off vintage-feeling mini, all styles are fair game. And they look especially fresh right now styled with transitional layers. A fitted turtleneck, ballet flats, and a suede blazer today. In a month or two? Trade the turtleneck for a tee and the ballet flats for sandals. (More layering tips to try right now in this newsletter!)
FRESH DENIM JACKET SHAPES
The standard issue trucker jacket isn’t going anywhere, but it’s the new styles and shapes that are gaining traction this year. The bomber, barn jacket, utility style and blazer are being re-invented in denim. And it makes sense as we’ve been wearing all of these silhouettes in leather, suede and canvas the past couple seasons.
The range of jackets right now mirrors the range of jeans: anything goes. From shrunken to oversized, light wash to rinse, there is no wrong answer. And whether you pair your jacket back to denim or something else like a skirt, dress or trousers just keep the proportion in mind so that it all works together.
DENIM CULOTTES (similar light wash denim culottes to shop here)
NEW LENGTHS
Longer shorts and shorter pants are the new lengths to consider this season. Call them what you will – culottes, gauchos, capris (just maybe not jorts) – they are all making their way to the forefront.
I know it feels strange the first time you put on a new proportion you’re not used to. But if you want to move the needle in your denim wardrobe and make a statement, this is where you can really try something new.
I love an oversized sweater styled with denim gauchos and lace-up flats. I can practically hear my mom saying: “That outfit makes no sense.” But that’s exactly why I love it. There’s something chic about an outfit that doesn’t totally “make sense.” That tension — cozy on top, breezy on bottom — just feels fresh. And as we are nearing the end of winter and inching towards spring it also feels transitional and timely.
DISTRESSED DENIM
Distressed denim is making a comeback. Think raw hems, holes in the knees and broken in seams. Relaxed, cool, edgy.
To style it, there’s nothing I love more than distressed denim with an ultra-feminine top. It’s the masculine/ feminine balance that defines my personal style. A raw hem with a silk blouse. Cutoff shorts with a structured blazer. Destruction paired with polish.
When something feels too sweet, add edge. When something feels too hard, add softness. That’s the formula that I love and am very excited for this season.
DENIM ON DENIM
If light wash denim-on-denim is as cool and casual as it comes, dark rinse denim paired together is an extremely elevated counterpoint. Whether you match tones exactly or play with contrast, head-to-toe denim is a great way to wear your denim pieces this season. The only rule? Commit.
DENIM MICRO TRENDS
THE PEPLUM
The peplum jean is a new style emerging from high-end designers like Alaïa to denim labels like Agolde. It’s a directional shape – and a statement-making piece – for anyone looking to experiment.

LIGHT PINK
Light pink is sneaking into the denim mix this spring. It’s a beautiful addition to the earth tones I talked about last week and brands like Isabel Marant, Dior and Citizens of Humanity are all infusing pretty shades of the blush into their denim assortments this season.
