Woman in yoga clothes
Free People Movement

I love doing yoga all year round – it’s such a great physical workout and mental reset. There is something about hot yoga classes (aka Bikram yoga) that I really love, especially in the winter when I crave being warm and my body temperature feels like it’s the summer for one glorious hour. Whether you have a regular yoga practice or are trying out your first yoga class, wearing the right clothes makes all the difference. Breathable materials and stretchy fabrics that allow for a full range of motion are key. Looking and feeling good in your yoga attire doesn’t hurt either.  You never know who you might meet in your downward dog! Here is what to wear for your next yoga class to help you find your flow….and the perfect yoga outfit for you.

What to Wear to Yoga

Sports Bra

While a supportive sports bra is a necessity for high impact workouts, for any type of yoga I find that comfort is key. You’ll want to find a good sports bra that holds you in in all the right places, but is soft and comfortable for all of your various poses. Low to medium impact bras work best. That means no hooks or clasps at the back or underwires that dig into you. (A regular bra is never a good option to wear for yoga!) Bras that slide over your head and come in breathable fabrics are my go-to.  Here are my top picks for cute and comfortable sports bras with really good support.

SHOP SPORTS BRAS:

Yoga Pants

Yoga leggings are the most popular pants for yoga as they allow for a full range of motion no matter what your body type is. I personally love a high-waisted pair that holds everything in and stays in place throughout the entire class. Make sure they are fitted and hit at your ankle or above. You don’t want pants that are too wide or too long as you’ll be barefoot during class. If your personal preference is for yoga shorts, the premise is the same. You’ll want a pair in a stretchy material that holds you in and doesn’t restrict your movements.

SHOP YOGA PANTS:

Yoga Tops

Breathable tops are key for yoga. You’ll want to wear something fitted in moisture-wicking fabrics as it makes a huge difference in your practice when your top stays in place. If you wear a loose t-shirt, make sure to tuck it in or tie it in a knot so it doesn’t get in the way while doing different poses or fall over your head during inversions. You can also wear a crop top or sports bra alone, especially if you’re prone to being very hot or sweaty during your workout. These are my favorite fitted tops for your next yoga session:

What to Bring With You to Yoga:

Yoga Mat

It’s always a good idea to bring your own yoga mat to class. Yes, any yoga studio will have mats you can borrow for class, but they get used by so many people, you can never be sure how clean they are!

Yoga Towel

I love to bring a yoga towel for a few reasons. If the mat gets wet or slippery, you can always lay the towel down.  I also like to rest my face on it during shavasana.  And of course, I use it to dry off after class.

Yoga Strap

Sometimes positions are just a little out of reach and you need a strap to help you get there. This one is great as it pulls double duty as a mat strap – loop the ends around your mat to carry it to/ from class.

Yoga Socks

While most people practice yoga in bare feet, a select few do wear yoga socks for extra grip on their mat.

Yoga Bag

A bag that fits your mat and towel makes carrying everything to class that much easier.  This bag also has exterior pockets for your water bottle, wallet, phone and keys.

Water Bottle

Don’t forget a refillable water bottle!  Hydration is key, especially in a heated studio. This water bottle can keep your water cold for up to 24 hours and is easy to carry with the top handle.

SHOP YOGA ACCESSORIES:

Have fun trying different classes and remember that the right attire can make or break your practice. Use this guide to find comfortable clothes that fit well and allow for unrestricted movement. And the most important thing is to enjoy it!  Yoga really does help the body and mind!  Namaste.
