We’re having a real pants moment right now. From skinny to wide leg and everything in between, there is no leg shape that is off limits. Even with the warmer weather, we’re seeing the streets full of fashionable pants looks. I’ve designed and studied trouser fits longer than I’d care to admit since launching Khakis by Gap back in 2012 so this is kind of my Super Bowl! I love this cycle that we are in right now, because as you all know, there is no ‘one size fits all’. It’s amazing to have such a wide variety of styles that can fit every body type. I’ve narrowed the playing field down to 10 different types of pants to help you zero in on your perfect pair. Keep scrolling for my women’s pants guide and the need-to-know-now trends.
1. Cargo Pants
Cargo pants were originally designed for the military with their practical oversized pockets. But they have been commandeered by fashion afficianados and updated many times over throughout the years. If cargo pants fit your personal style, this is a great trend for you. There are a lot of options, from loose, easy, casual pants (think paperbag waist or parachute pants) to jeans to sleeker dress pant styles.

2. Carpenter Pants
Carpenter pants go right along with cargo pants in their utilitarian use and vibe. Popular for their fit and details, they are usually high-waisted with a wider leg opening and feature a utility pocket and hammer loop. Many will also have contrast color topstitching like this black pair from Gap.

3. Capri Pants
Capri pants and the more extreme pedal pushers are a hot trend right now. They are the perfect pants for summer with their shorter silhouette and pair so well with sandals.

4. Baggy Pants
Baggy pants are a great casual look with their oversized, looser fit. There are various styles from slightly loose to extremely oversized. They look great paired with a slim tee or sexy cami to balance out the proportions.

5. Pleated Pants
There are so many types of tailored pants including wide, straight, and flared leg shapes. But I think pleated pants make the best work pants with their clean look and relaxed fit, plus they look great on every body shape. I love them paired with a vest for a modern take on sartorial dressing. Go for elevated materials in neutral colors for a meeting, brunch, or cocktails. Here’s more on how to style work pants.

6. Wide Leg Pants
The wide-leg silhouette is popular in pants and jeans at the moment. Whether it’s a high waisted, cropped style or a lower rise barrel style, you can’t go wrong with a wider leg shape. Linen wide leg pants are the perfect weight and shape for summer. For a more casual look, swap them out for jeans. Here’s more on how to style wide-leg jeans for any occasion.

7. Palazzo Pants
Palazzo pants are a summertime classic! They are usually made of lightweight fabric, have an elastic waistband, and are often in a fun print. You cannot find a breezier, vacation-ready pair of pants.

8. Flared Pants
If you have been a boot-cut jeans girl in the past, this is a great modern update for you. These full length, high-waisted pants help to elongate your legs. Flare jeans evoke that sexy 70’s vibe and look great with just a simple tee or a more feminine blouse. (Read more on how to style feminine tops with jeans here.)

9. Skinny Jeans
Skinny jeans are just what they sound like….skinny, tight-fitting pants. Rumors are floating around that skinny jeans are coming back. (for some, they never left!) If that is the case, Hailey Bieber makes them look chic in white paired back to a blazer and heels.

10. Formal Trousers
If you’re personal style and preference is to wear pants to formal events, a tuxedo pant is a great style for you. They are generally straight, flared, or pleated with a matching satin stripe down the side. This straight pair that Jenna Lyons is wearing looks great with a matching blazer and heels.
