Best of Lingerie-Dressing: Styles and Brands You Need Now

8.4.23

Lingerie is not just reserved for the bedroom. These days it’s for everyday dressing too. It may feel a bit rebellious to reveal something that is usually hidden, but that's what makes it so appealing. The balance of something so delicate and detailed against harder pieces like denim or leather makes an immediate impact. A style as simple as a silk cami that started out as sleepwear can be transformed from a classic underpinning by day to an elevated top by night. Top fashion brands like Prada and Stella McCartney have taken these romantic pieces a step further with their lace-trimmed silk dresses and skirts having their moment in the spotlight. Styling them is the key to whether you take these pieces to an evening out or a morning meeting. (Bedroom to Boardroom anyone?). Below is our guide for the best underwear-turned-outerwear trends and our favorite ways to style them.

Reminiscent of the 90’s (thank you Kate Moss), the slip dress has come to embody lingerie dressing in its most simple, understated, and versatile form. It is one of those individual items that every modern woman needs in her wardrobe to wear any season, for any occasion. Other perfect pieces that are lingerie-inspired are a simple silk cami and slip skirt. Pair the cami with jeans and the skirt with a tee or sweater and you have a look that transcends seasonality. Wear them together (we love two-piece sets) with a blazer layered over both for a fail-safe outfit for the office, lunch meeting, or drinks with friends at night. It's also a chic and comfortable look to wear for travel. Try curling up in them on a long trip - they started in the bedroom after all!

For someone who likes more of a feminine twist, there are so many interpretations of unique vintage pieces with beautiful touches. Inspired by romantic silhouettes with lace appliques and trims, these feminine dresses, skirts, and tops have old-world charm updated with modern style. Look to romantic clothing brands like Love Shack Fancy and Alice & Olivia for some standout pieces.

Many of these gorgeous styles come in a wide selection of pastel colors from robin's egg blues to pale yellows and soft pinks like Christopher Kane's Spring 2023 collection above. We love how he trimmed his pieces with white lace to give it a lingerie feeling. Hailey Beiber also stepped out in a soft pink lingerie-inspired slip dress by Anna October's eponymous label this summer. The beauty of the design is that it has a bralette incorporated into it so that you don't have to worry about what to wear underneath it.

If you're more of a minimalist, stick with a neutral color palette like black, navy, or cream, and all of these pieces slide into a capsule wardrobe easily that you can wear for years to come. Slinky white dresses are also trending, with and without the lace. This may sound reminiscent of bridal attire, but we love it grounded with a blazer and sneakers for a super cool model-off-duty vibe like Geraldine Boublil styled it below. Pairing it with an oversized black leather jacket and ballet flats is another great option for spring or fall. (We love these flats by Loeffler Randall)

A luxury brand like Saint Laurent may come with a higher price tag but there are various price points in the market. You can easily find a more affordable price from popular feminine brands like Free People and Self Portrait. You can also find affordable romantic dresses from sustainable brands like Reformation - their Provence dress comes in four colors and is made of 100% Silk. Ref is also very transparent about where their products get made....many of their dresses are made in their own factory in Los Angeles and others at their sustainable partner factories around the world. They are one of the few brands in the fashion industry that only uses recycled, regenerative, deadstock, or natural materials. Another one of our new favorite brands with tons of gorgeous dresses is SIR. Their new collections of silk maxi dresses with lace details are effortlessly feminine with that intimates-meets-ready-to-wear look. (shop all of these brand's designs below).
