Being kind to our planet is a year-long endeavor. But Earth Day is a great time to shine a light on those brands making a difference and to remind us that we are all in this together. Sustainable fashion brands put ethical standards at the forefront of their business and no decision is made without taking its environmental impact into account. And they prove that you can make beautiful, fashionable, well-made products while keeping sustainability as your core mission.



## WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE OR ETHICAL CLOTHING?

The first major tenet of any ethical brand is the use of sustainable materials.  This means using natural fibers like organic cotton and linen or recycled fabrics.  They may also use regenerative farming practices to grow their cotton, subscribe to a recycling program to repurpose items like plastic bottles, and use renewable energy to power their manufacturing.  Many aim to use less water in their production process and shun toxic chemicals in favor of natural dyes.



Generally speaking, eco-friendly clothing and accessories tend to be more expensive.  This is because all of the basic principles of sustainable practices are more costly.  Recycled and organic materials are more expensive as they go through more processes and are held to a higher standard than conventional fabrics.  Many companies create in small batches to ensure there isn't any waste.  When you produce in small quantities, you can't take advantage of bulk savings.  And many of these brands also subscribe to fair trade which ensures a living wage for everyone in their supply chain.  They may also try to produce locally to reduce their carbon footprint.  While many more affordable brands give lip service to sustainability, you should read further into it to see if they really are as clean as they report to be.

I have a confession to make - I am a product junkie! My addiction actually runs in the family. My aunt was the East Coast Marketing Director at Estée Lauder for twenty years starting in the late 60s. When I was growing up, my family would often visit my aunt, uncle, and cousins who lived in Northern New Jersey. I spent most of these visits crouched under the sink in their powder room shuffling through giant plastic containers filled with lipsticks, powders, mascara, perfumes, and creams. I would organize the products into categories, sample the products on myself and whoever would let me give them a makeover, and when our visits were over, I would beg my aunt to let me keep said products only to be told “no, you’re too young” by my mom. Those visits were my “kid in a candy store” moments and I savored those visits which remain a core memory for me to this day!  



As you can see, my addiction is real. It’s literally in my blood! What does one do when they have an addiction? They can get help (not sure there’s a rehab for my addiction). They can go cold turkey and break their addiction or, like me, they can use their knowledge to help educate other product junkies which is exactly what I did back in 2010 when I created the blog: BeBlushing, a product junkie’s daily dose of beauty. I spent 5 years sharing my knowledge of make-up and skin care to my followers. It was an incredible ride that included backstage access to NYC Fashion Week and one on one time with CEOs of cosmetic companies. I met and interviewed designers and the most exciting part of it was organizing fundraisers and being able to donate money to important charities. Flash forward to today and I’m still a hopeless product junkie! My style and my skincare have definitely changed through the years but one thing is still the same:  my bathroom cabinets are still overflowing with products and now that I am writing again for Vetted, I can continue to indulge my addiction all for the sake of research (of course)! I don't know about you, but I've been guilty of packing way more clothes, shoes, and cosmetics than I could ever use during a trip.  I start off organized, but by the time I finish I'm just throwing random things into my luggage "just in case"!  After many years of traveling for both business and pleasure, I've finally come up with the perfect packing formula that works every time.  It's a minimalist travel wardrobe and it's like a microcosm of your everyday capsule wardrobe.  I've found that when you plan ahead to create a tight packing list of classic styles that are able to mix and match together, you can create endless outfits and always look like you're wearing something new!  These pieces also work for many different occasions, ensuring you always have the perfect thing to wear wherever your trip takes you.  



The best way to achieve this is by sticking to a **neutral color palette** so that everything works together.  **Pack quality items** because these pieces of clothing will work overtime and you don't want any fashion mishaps.  And **focus on versatility** so that each item carries it's weight (literally!).  For shorter trips it's easy to pack light, but if you follow these general rules of thumb, you'll be able to avoid overpacking and the need for a large suitcase.



As for cosmetics, I like to pack products that are a 2-for-1, meaning they have multiple uses so I can pack half the amount.  And as a bonus, it also takes half the time to get ready!

I just returned from a Florida trip myself and experienced a wild range of weather.  And my dad, who is currently wintering in Florida, loves to call with weather updates so I know it fluctuates daily!  (Who doesn't love that?!)

The ultimate goal when traveling is to look chic and put-together while weaving through the airport and then to be as comfortable as possible once aboard the plane, especially when embarking on an overnight flight.  There are clearly two different approaches to an _airport_ outfit vs an _airplane_ outfit which need to come together!  



To that end, layering is key.  The perfect travel outfit starts out with soft, breathable fabrics and light layers as your base with a chic jacket to top it off and pull it all together.  The best pants I've found for a long plane ride are[ Lululemon's Align yoga pants]( https://www.net-a-porter.com/en-us/shop/product/lululemon/sport/leggings/align-high-rise-leggings-28/1647597317404092 ) that have stretch without being too tight or restrictive. Speaking of your bag, it's a good idea to keep all of your air travel essentials in a large tote that is easy to store within arm's reach.  Even if I have a carry-on bag, I still bring a tote for my laptop, phone, passport, and anything else I like to keep close by. They are both super-hydrating and the perfect size to keep on hand.

[Bose QuietComfort Noise Canceling Headphones ](https://www.bose.com/p/headphones/bose-quietcomfort-45-headphones/QC45-HEADPHONEARN.html)is the best way to block out any unwanted sounds.  They have saved me from listening to snoring on many a flight!  Plus I love to watch movies for 16 hours straight when away from my family. (Who doesn't?!)

A great way to get comfy on a flight is to bring a cashmere scarf or wrap to cozy up with.  If your destination is to a colder climate, you will need this once you land and head outside as well.  [J. The last thing I keep in my bag are dark sunglasses for when I land and inevitably look tired!  Especially when taking an international flight, jet lag will set in and you'll want to be ready. If I can only pack one pair of sunglasses, they are my go-to pair.

Some other things you might like to keep on hand for a long haul flight are an [eye mask](https://www.slip.com/collections/sleep-masks), [a refillable, collapsible water bottle](https://amzn.to/3ET7puP), and a book or magazine.  If you are seated in first class or taking a business class flight, they might already provide these things.  But it's always nice to be prepared!

For all of us 90's babies, this trend could not be more on point.  Mom jeans, ribbed tanks, OG sambas and a cute baseball cap is all we need to turn on the nostalgia. And since joining a club and focusing on wellness is just a way of life when you reach a certain age (ahem), we might as well dress the part. Never boring, always in style....the trench has been a fashion staple for decades.  It is the quintessential outerwear piece to transition you out of winter through spring or to layer over sweaters come fall.  (Don’t worry, we’ll remind you in September ;))

5.10.23  Pearls are having a major resurgence. They are no longer reserved for your grandmother's generation, the country club, or even royalty for that matter.  Gone are the prim & proper connotations that comes along with wearing a strand of pearly whites.  Current designers' approach to pearls is way more creative and fun. The newest iterations are decidedly cool especially when paired with something unexpected and much less polished.   


Not only are the latest creations intended to look more modern, but how you choose to style them also plays a major role.  Just wearing a single strand of pearls with jeans and a t-shirt or stacking it with a gold chain and pendants gives them a casual vibe and ups the cool factor of the pearls themselves. When something looks effortless, there is almost always a certain amount of effort that went into it. Layering necklaces is one of those things. Stacking has become an art form and we are here to help you make that "effortless look" easy.


We've handpicked our favorite necklaces of different dimensions to make it simple for you to create your own stack. And with various price points, you can shop high or low or simply choose one that stacks well with necklaces you already own.  Follow our ultimate guide below on how to create the perfect necklace stack that reflects your own personal style.

## 1.  Choose the Length of Your Stack

A great way to start is by choosing the length of your stack: all can be short, long or choose necklaces of varying lengths.  

As a simple rule, the shortest necklace should be 16", mid-length necklaces are 18", and longer necklaces are in the 20-24" range.  If you want extremely long chains, you can find some that are 30"-36".  We like to keep the necklace layers within the 16"-24" range so they create a nice stack when paired together.


## 2.  Strike the Right Balance

Next, be sure to consider the weight and size of each piece to strike the right balance. You might want to consider delicate chains mixed with chunkier chains to create your own unique look.  Selecting bold drop pendants or mixing in pearl necklaces with your chain stack can also be a fun way to create a statement look. Generally speaking, you should pick one metal for your stack.  Our personal penchant is to use yellow gold chains.  If you love rose gold or white gold, choose different necklaces in one of these metals to create your layered look.

One fun way to create your own unique stack is to add a personal touch like an initial or monogram.  You can also add a favorite necklace that has been handed down to you by your mom or grandmother or given to you for a special occasion. 


## 5.  Play with Texture and Pattern

A good idea when it comes to necklace layering is to play with the different textures and patterns of the chains you are using.  Layer a smooth herringbone chain next to a bolder paperclip chain (these are also usually adjustable which gives you more options for different lengths when layering it).
